Karonga District – Climate Adaptation Information

Discover strategies and solutions tailored to different regions and sectors.

Overviews & Priorities

Karonga District, located in northern Malawi, faces floods, droughts, extreme heat, storms, and landslides, significantly impacting agriculture, infrastructure, water resources, and human health. Flooding occurs almost every rainy season, particularly affecting low-lying areas along the North Rukuru River and Karonga Town. Climate change is reducing water availability, increasing extreme weather events, and altering ecosystem processes. Key priorities include improving flood management, strengthening climate-smart agriculture, reinforcing infrastructure resilience, enhancing early warning systems, and integrating climate adaptation into development planning.

Agriculture

Droughts and reduced rainfall lowering crop yields

Flooding destroying farmlands and washing away soil nutrients

Increased temperatures reducing soil moisture and crop resilience

Soil degradation from deforestation and poor farming practices

Drought-resistant crops: Promote heat-tolerant varieties like sorghum and cassava

Climate-smart agriculture: Encourage conservation farming, crop rotation, and organic fertilizers

Irrigation development: Expand small-scale irrigation, solar-powered pumps, and rainwater harvesting

Soil conservation: Implement agroforestry, vetiver grass planting, and terracing

Livelihood diversification: Support farmers in poultry, beekeeping, and climate-resilient crops

Fisheries

Overfishing reducing fish stocks

Siltation of breeding grounds due to deforestation and soil erosion

Rising lake temperatures affecting fish health and reproduction

Sustainable fishing practices: Enforce seasonal fishing bans and restrict illegal fishing gear

Aquaculture development: Encourage fish farming as an alternative to wild fishing

Riparian zone restoration: Plant trees and vegetation along riverbanks to prevent siltation

Water quality monitoring: Improve pollution control measures in fishing areas

Forestry

Deforestation due to charcoal production and agriculture expansion

Increased wildfire risks due to prolonged dry seasons

Loss of biodiversity and increased soil erosion

Afforestation and reforestation: Implement large-scale tree planting programs

Community forest management: Strengthen local governance on forest conservation

Alternative energy promotion: Encourage LPG use, solar cooking, and fuel-efficient stoves

Fire management: Conduct awareness programs and establish firebreaks

Infrastructure

Flooding damaging roads, bridges, and homes

Poor drainage systems causing urban flooding

Weak buildings susceptible to strong winds and storms

Flood defenses: Install flood barriers and reinforce river dykes

Disaster-resilient housing: Promote elevated homes and flood-resistant construction materials

Drainage improvements: Construct better urban drainage systems and stormwater channels

Early warning systems: Strengthen meteorological data collection and communication networks

Social Sector

Food insecurity from droughts and crop failures

Health risks from heatwaves and poor sanitation

Social safety nets: Expand cash transfer programs and crop insurance

Community awareness programs: Educate residents on climate adaptation and risk reduction

Health system strengthening: Improve medical infrastructure and ensure access to clean water

Alternative livelihoods: Support small businesses, vocational training, and agro-processing
